Cartmel Village Shop - Sticky Toffee Pudding

A must for any visit to Cartmel in South Lakeland (after the huge priory) has to be the Cartmel Village Shop. You can buy some of the famous Sticky Toffee Pudding which has been created here since 1989. So successful has the enterprise been that the village shop has had to stop making other produce and concentrate solely on puddings, opening a purpose built kitchen in the grounds of the family house in 2000. They now export all over europe and the Lake District of course :)

Lucys of Ambleside

Lucys deli next door to Lucys on a plate in Ambleside is a gastronomical delight. Full to the brim with local Cumbrian and Lake District produce including famous Cartmel sticky toffee puddings, preserves and cheeses. It is an excellent place to stock up for a special picnic, dinner or getting ready for Christmas. Go next door and enjoy divine puddings at Lucys on a Plate, or be specially indulgent and go to the Up the Duff Pudding Club which is held once a month where you can try as many deserts as you can manage, YUM!

Damp day in Threlkeld

Even on a foggy damp day, the Lake District is a beatiful place to be. This moss has probobally taken hundreds of years to establish on this ancient dry stone wall, those which line the miles of country lanes throughout Cumbria. Make sure you get out of your car whilst you are here, there is so much to see when the world is not flying by at 40mph.

SummitPost.org - Scafell Pike Climbing Information

SummitPost.org - Scafell Pike Climbing Information: "Scafell Pike is the highest summit in England, at 977 meters. It is located in the Cumbrian Moutains, and located in what is known as the Lake District in NW England not too far south of Scotland. Many people climb the mountain all year round, and this is one of the best preserved hill sections in all the UK, despite the fact that the area can seem to be a 'tourist trap'. The summit can be reached by just walking over rough terrian or by a number of scrambles at varying grades. The mountain can be combined with other mountains/hills in the surrounding area of the Lake District. The Lake District is is easily accessable via the M6 and other main roads take you into the centre, but to reach the starting point the roads become narrower and windier."

Welcome to Shepherds Walks - The Finest Walks in Cumbria

Welcome to Shepherds Walks - The Finest Walks in Cumbria: "Welcome to the Cumbria section of Shepherds Walks. Cumbria, including the Lake District has long been recognised as the finest landscape for walking in the country. There are plenty of areas the crowds never find in the Lake District and the county of Cumbria and hopefully I have tried to write walks in some of these. Even on the busiest of summer days, it's relatively easy to escape the crowds by climbing to the higher fells and more remote valleys or alternatively heading away from the main, 'Tourist traps'. If you choose to visit Cumbria in late autumn or winter, you are treated to empty paths and the lovely crisp, clear air, which makes it extra special"

Lake District Walks Title Page

Lake District Walks Title Page: "The English Lake District is the most beautiful natural terrain I know. In 1990 I was fortunate enough to be able to come to live here permanently and walk the Lakeland fells to my heart's content. This site is dedicated to all those who explore the area on foot. Herwick Sheep

The Herdwick Sheep is synonamous with the Lake District. This hardy high fell breed is capable of surviving the harsh winter weather in Cumbria and exists in the poor vegetated hill parstures where other breed would not fair well. It has had a tough time in recent years, at risk from foot and mouth and also a drop in demand for its fleece. Keeping the breed for meat is barely viable either any more. However, there is a great deal of support in the region to ensure the long term survival of the breed which was initially started by Beatrix Potter who left all her Lakeland farms to the National Trust on the condition that they ensure the breed is always bred on them.
