BBC NEWS | England | Cumbria | Lakes' info centres face closure: "Lakes' info centres face closure Lake District Millions of visitors flock to the Lake District every year Job losses and tourist information centre closures are likely as the Lake District National Park Authority struggles to combat a cash crisis. The authority, along with other national parks, has been told its government grant is to be frozen."

Cumbria Tourist Board is bidding to set up a separate organisation - Infoco - to help visitors with information. There are 33 TICs in the county run by 13 different organisations at a total cost of around £1.7m a year. The Lake District National Park Authority intends to close six centres, while South Lakeland District Council is reviewing its seven centres."

Plans unveiled for Lakes whisky based in Staveley Wood yard

Andrew Currie has unveiled plans to begin producing a single malt whisky in the Lake District at Staveley, between Windermere and Kendal. He plans to use the pure water of the River Kent, fed from high mountain catchement areas, to make a unique high quality single malt whisky.
