Might be time you checked out the YHA's. Still they have a fuddy duddy reputation, but this is long an old story. Properties are up to date, warm, you don't have to do chores, and they even have double rooms. Nothing like the old days! Check them out and you might be in for a very pleasant surprise. There are more than a dozen hostels in the Lake District, some are in the centres such as Kewick and Ambleside, others are very remote and excellent places to escape the madding crowds.
